Dan Thompson
Drawing and Painting the Portrait and Figure

June 2 - 6, 2008
$625

Drawing and Painting the human head is massive undertaking. The complexity of the forms of the face must be built upon a sense of the body's pose and character. Gesture and its fundamental influence over construction will be addressed through a series of poses, beginning with figure and then focusing in on the head, rather than simply the face. Finally, the workshop will conclude with a longer pose.

Facial features will be discussed. In this case, the combination of what is being observed with what has been introduced in terms of form structure and orientation should clarify things a great deal. Archetypes of the ears, nose, eyes, and mouth, as well as their relationships to each other will be discussed, while the objective of accurately recreating them in graphite, charcoal or paint is stressed.

There is no prerequisite in terms of experience necessary to benefit from the material; all skill levels are welcome.

Six Day Figure Drawing Workshop
Don't miss this opportunity to study with an internationally known artist.
"Dan's knowledge is so vast and thorough that it would be hard to pin any one subject down. He is an inspiring teacher and his knowledge of structural anatomy and the application to visual/optical drawing is awesome (not a day goes by that I don't feel like I've learned something, by proxy, from him via one of our shared students). He is also a brilliant color theorist and would be terrific for a painting workshop as well as drawing." - Michael Grimaldi Artist, Instructor, Co- Founder, Grand Central Academy

Long Pose Portrait Drawing and Painting
Aug. 4 - Aug. 15, 2008
In his class, Long Pose Drawing and Painting Workshop, Dan Thompson explores the complexity of the forms of the face built upon a sense of the body's pose and character. The first two days of the workshop are devoted to a figure studies using a female and male model, and a discussion of anatomy. The last three days of this workshop involve a long portrait pose. The model sits nude from the waist up to gain a sense of the direction and anatomy of the body in relation to the head and face. Dan discusses the structures of the ears, nose, eyes and mouth, and their relationship to each other in detail. This class offers the flexibility of working with both drawing and painting materials, or just one, if the student chooses. In working with oil the student will learn about Dan's contemporary palette within the classic portrait structure. He uses colored theatrical lighting gels to evoke new ways of seeing light and color in his students.

This class is open to students of all levels. Dan Thompson offers individual critiques and is readily accessible for advice and insight
