 | Light Key Figure Painting Dan Thompson July 5 - 16 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. $1,400 |
The workshop begins with a slide lecture and discussion, outlining the goal of learning to see light conditions on the human figure and utilizing a full-color palette to recreate these observations. Next, through a series of fundamental exercises which delve more deeply into the practice, students learn how to capture a specific light key using still life. The figure is then introduced and studied intensely, under different colored light conditions. Painting bold starts and exploring planar organization in developing their studies, students use week one to prepare for longer, more challenging poses during the second week.

A Painter Looks at Structure, Slide Lecture and Drawing Demonstration
October 10, 2010
Dan Thompson will investigate the influence of structural thinking on the portrait. This will include an explanation of planar vs. structural analysis, morphology, as well as features of the head. Dan’s examples
of structural interpretation will include diagrams and emphasize thinking sculpturally. He will conclude the slide presentation by emphasizing creative, structural approaches, and by deconstructing his own work.
Part two will be a demonstration drawing from life by Dan Thompson. He will discuss the difference between a two dimensional, tonal pattern approach to the human head, and a theoretical, structural approach to the human head.
